How to Attract Job Applicants When Your Company is Located in a Bad Location

Recruiting can be a tough enough job. Factor in an employer that’s situated 50 miles in every direction from no place especially exciting, and you might have a hard time finding any candidate who is interested in relocation. Any recruiter worth her salt can bring in candidates for a high-demand job in a great city. Filling less-than-desirable positions gives you the chance to polish up your skills and really shine.

Whether it’s a rural area or a city that doesn’t have great appeal, there’s someone at the top of their game who wants to live and work there. Or at least there’s a great candidate who can be convinced that it’s a smart career move.

Look for Locals

They say that you can never go home again, but some people would really like to. In your sourcing, look for candidates who might have grown up near the area where the job is located. Or find people who lived someplace similar. Candidate matching technology can help bring you and those ideal candidates together.

It might be a real challenge to convince a lifelong city dweller that a town in rural Iowa is the place to be. But for someone who was raised in small-town America, there wouldn’t be any culture shock. And the idea of going home, either literally or figuratively, might be a happy one.

Promote From Within

Top talent already knows that they’re in demand. That’s one strike against you if you don’t have a great location to sell. But for people who already work in the company, relocating is a nonissue. Promoting from within can remove a major barrier.

Internal hiring creates a new vacancy, of course. But if an employee moves up and leaves open a job that doesn’t require an elite skill set, you’re more likely to find a suitable candidate who already lives in or near the area.

Recruiting

Many slower-paced rural towns make work/life balance a lot easier to achieve.

Turn on the Location Charm

Every area has something going for it. Rural locations typically have a lower cost of living, and some of them are much safer than living in big cities. Think about the fresh air and nonexistent traffic jams for commuting, and you’ve got a few perks that top candidates won’t find in busier areas. Candidates with children might love getting away from the bustle.

Even downtrodden cities have some appeal. A great example is Detroit, which has a well-documented, difficult past. But there are “pockets of Detroit that are so vibrant,” says Matt Miller for Bloomberg. Find out what makes the area special, and home in on why living there would be fulfilling.

Offer Meaningful Perks

Everyone knows that better compensation can attract top talent. But with more candidates, money isn’t everything, or at least not every important thing. Perks come in all shapes and sizes. Get creative with it and you could develop a package that’s hard to resist.

Are moving expenses high? Offer to pay for relocation. Will there be a major culture shock? IQ Partners recommends giving the candidate a genuinely flexible work schedule for the first few weeks to allow her to settle into the job and the community plus set up housekeeping without feeling like she’s fallen headlong into a strange new world.

Recruiting top talent to a place that’s on nobody’s bucket list isn’t easy, but you’re up to the task. This is an area where knowing more about the candidate really helps. Your matching technology will be invaluable.

They say that location is the most important thing, and that’s probably still true. But no matter where you are, there’s always a plus. Who knows? You might find a candidate who lives on a sunny Florida beach but is tired of dodging hurricanes. And she might dream of the chance to work on a peaceful lane in Idaho.

Recruiting brings about new challenges and opportunities every day.
